![]() Members of the audience know the song well, and as Rita’s voice rings out, I have a feeling I’m surrounded, indeed, by the soul of the place, finding its expression through the diva on stage. This song must have special resonance for those who’ve had to leave this Maritime Province to find work as mines and fisheries faltered. I caress you oh Cape Breton in my dreams.” It was a perfect, regal setting for Rita and the parade of Island Women that followed.įrom Rita we heard her song, what seems to be an almost anthem for the Islanders, “Home I’ll Be.” We’ve heard it at other concerts, but never with the power and authority with which Rita sings it: The Savoy is a restored vaudeville theatre in Sydney, Cape Breton Island. The audience members were delighted and entranced. The show continued that night and so did her performance at the Savoy.Īnd can she sing! Rita MacNeil commands an incredible vocal instrument with which she produces sounds that rise with seeming ease from the bounty of her whole body. “It took ten minutes to get me up,” she tells us. The large Rita, the massive curtain, and her green dress, all rolling out into view of the audience. (We learn throughout the week of the festival that we are in a story-telling culture and come to expect lots of humor and bantering from musicians on stage.) She says that she was about to perform at a concert recently, but as she strode toward front and center, her dress tangled with the stage curtain and the curtain entered with her. “I’ve got one bad leg and soon to have another,” she says, explaining her need to stay seated. Though she was compelled by a malady to sit for her performance, her voice did not suffer. She appeared with Madison Violet, The Once, Cathy Ann MacPhee and Kathleen MacInnes, Mary Jane Lamond and Wendy MacIsaac, Nuala Kennedy, and Sylvie LeLievre. I saw her for the first time during the Island Women concert, an event featured as part of the 16th annual Celtic Colours, 2012. Rita MacNeil, a native of Big Pond, Cape Breton, has had a stellar career with songs that have soared to the top of the charts in the UK, Canada, and Australia. I attended this fulsome festival with a few friends, but the notes and opinions that follow are solely mine. Just cross the causeway and you too will feel something magical on the other side of the Strait of Canso. In fact, the reds, oranges, and yellows (that become more intense during our more than a week in our Belle Côte residence) are almost as delicious as are the butterscotch pies, biscuits, baked beans, and fish cakes at the Cedar House in Boularderie. Still, it is a festival of music that, for the most part, represents Cape Breton and the Maritime Provinces, and it is the lusciously fall-flavored Cape Breton hills and highlands that welcome us the moment we reach the island. Its mission, as Joella Foulds, founder and artistic director told us at one evening session, is to “promote, celebrate and develop Cape Breton’s living Celtic culture.” However, it has also become an acclaimed international festival and most assuredly extends tourist dollars and fattens Cape Breton pockets well into the autumn. The Celtic Colours Festival, named for the adornment of brilliant fall foliage that cloaks the hills on Cape Breton in October, recently finished its 16th year. These are migrating from Photoshop to Substance Painter in the first of a series of efforts to close the gap between both tools and unify the user experience. You may notice loads of eyes looking at you from the depths of the layer stack. Special shoutout to all of you spirograph fans out there.Ī release of Substance Painter is never complete without some UI tweaks, and this time the Layer Stack, Texture Set list and Channels list went through the hands of the UX team. ![]() The Symmetry tool has been improved with a brand new Radial option. The spherical projection proves useful to add specific patterns in some complicated setups: The planar projection comes with culling settings to fade properly with the geometry: With the Planar projection, your Fill layer will then act as a decal and several options allow you to play with tiling, as well as with how far the decal affects the geometry.Ī new placement gizmo makes it super-easy to move the decal around your asset: simply drag it around and it will snap to the surface of your mesh automatically. You can now choose between a Spherical and Planar projection for your layer. Two new projection modes have just been added, and more are on the way. Until now, Substance Painter has given you a choice between a good old UV projection and a Triplanar projection for Fill layers. You can even go further and combine all these functions into one, and come up with something like this Ivy generator, which spawns unique branches along the stroke path, branches alternate sides, and each successive branch becomes smaller than the previous one based on the speed of the stroke. With a bit of creativity, a touch of Substance Designer, and a lot of fun, you can do something like this: ![]() The brushes can also be time-sensitive, fading out, changing color, morphing, or doing any kind of crazy thing based on how much time has passed since you started painting. The way this works is that any Substance file can be used as a material or alpha when painting and becomes aware of each stamp being drawn, and can react accordingly.Ī simple example could be a grungy alpha that generates a unique shape with each new stamp, making each stroke totally unique. Your brush can evolve over time, swap its alpha at random or even generate a whole new material with each stamp. Dynamic Strokes introduces a way to generate procedural brush strokes based on Substance parameters. The Compare Mask is useful for creating quick height blends – but not just for this! It also works with any other channel in your texture set. Combine it with the updated Seamless Material sample project to create tileable environment materials rapidly. This new mask effect allows you to blend by comparing the content of the current layer with the one from the layer stack underneath, similar to the Blend-if function in Photoshop. Import a displacement map and marvel at the newly detailed silhouettes, or paint in your height channel to literally sculpt your asset in real time.ĭisplacement is great, but how about a way to blend and layer materials easily using their height data? The new Compare Mask effect does this and more. You can now enjoy tessellation and displacement in both the viewport and Iray. ![]() Some of you may remember us showing a hacky prototype of this a few years ago at a Substance Day event. Krypton is the fourth element in group 18 (VIIIA), which is also known as group 0 becausethe elements is this group were thought to have a zero oxidation point. Krypton gas presently costs about $690/100 L. Uses thus far have been limited because of its high cost. Krypton is used in certain photographic flash lamps for highspeed photography. Estimates of the concentration of reactants are therefore made possible. The activity of these kryptonates is sensitive to chemical reactions at the surface. By imbedding the isotope in various solids, kryptonates are formed. 85Kr has found recent application in chemical analysis. Krypton clathrates have been prepared with hydroquinone and phenol. Molecule-ions of ArKr+ and KrH+ have been identified and investigated, and evidence is provided for the formation of KrXe or KrXe+. A higher fluoride of krypton and a salt of an oxyacid of krypton also have been prepared. Krypton difluoride has been prepared in gram quantities and can be made by several methods. While krypton is generally thought of as a noble gas that normally does not combine with other elements, the existence of some krypton compounds has been established. Solid krypton is a white crystalline substance with a face-centered cubic structure that is common to all the rare gases. In October 1983 the meter was again redefined by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures as being the length of path traveled by light in a vacuum during a time interval of 1/299,792,458 of a second. This replaced the standard meter of Paris, which was defined in terms of a bar made of a platinum-iridium alloy. In 1960 it was internationally agreed that the fundamental unit of length, the meter, should be defined in terms of the orange-red spectral line of 86Kr. The spectral lines of krypton are easily produced and some are very sharp. Thirty other unstable isotopes and isomers are now recognized. Naturally occurring krypton contains six stable isotopes. ![]() It is characterized by its brilliant green and orange spectral lines. The atmosphere of Mars has been found to contain 0.3 ppm of krypton. Historyĭiscovered in 1898 by Ramsay and Travers in the residue left after liquid air had nearly boiled away, krypton is present in the air to the extent of about 1 ppm. There are traces of krypton in some minerals and meteorites. Along with some other gases, it is removed by filtering through activated charcoaland titanium. Krypton shows up as an impurity inthe residue. The gas is capturedcommercially by fractional distillation of liquid air. Krypton is expensive to produce and thus has limited use. It ranks just above methane (CH 4) in abundancein the atmosphere. Krypton is the 81st most abundant element on Earth and ranks seventh in abundance ofthe gases that make up Earth’s atmosphere.
